Who We Are
We Are Horizon Church
We are Horizon Church, a church in the NW corner of Calgary that aims to show and share the kindness of Jesus in everything we do.
We planted in 2017, and we long to bring the good news that Jesus saves into every area of our lives.
Horizon is committed to engaging in Jesus’ commission, embodying Jesus’ compassion and extending Jesus’
community in the community of Brentwood and beyond.
We long to see people transformed by the good news of Jesus Christ.
The story of Horizon Church begins years ago, back in 2013. It was around this time that God began to stir in Nathan’s heart a desire to start a new church: a church that connected with people of all beliefs and backgrounds. Though he was in Toronto at the time, he sensed God leading him to start a new church in his hometown of Calgary, Alberta.
Around the same time, Capstone Church was just about to launch as a new church in Calgary. Led by Pastor Kyle Harnett, they had a bold vision to plant 100 new churches across the country. When Nathan returned from Toronto (by way of a brief time in BC), he joined Kyle and the team that would launch Capstone Church in September 2014, with the goal of starting a new church out of Capstone someday.
In March of 2015, Nathan would take part in a Church Planter Assessment with C2C in Vancouver, and receive a recommendation for church planting, upon completing an apprenticeship within an existing church. In June of that same year, Nathan came on staff at Capstone as an Apprentice Church Planter.
During the course of this two year apprenticeship, God would work it out so that Capstone Church and Foothills Alliance Church would form a partnership to help start the new church that was beginning to form.
On May 18, 2017, 23 people gathered in a grocery store (yes, you read that right) for the very first meeting of what would become Horizon Church. Since then, Horizon has been working to show and share the kindness of Jesus to people in the community of Brentwood and the surrounding area.
Mission, Vision & Values
Our mission is to show and share the kindness of Jesus. We make disciples who make disciples: fully devoted followers of Jesus.
Our vision is to be a church that is living in light of the kingdom. We live into this reality as we engage in Jesus’ commission, express His compassion, and extend His community.
Who we are and what we do is centered on the person and work of Jesus Christ.
We believe in the power of sharing the unique story of how Jesus is changing your life, so we train each and every person to be a witness to the work that Jesus is doing in and through them.
We welcome the Spirit of Jesus and seek to be led by Him in all areas of our life and ministry.
We recognize that we are part of the kingdom of God, and our desire is to reflect in that all things by sharing resources, partnering with other churches, and working together to see the kingdom of heaven expand on earth.
We recognize the beauty of our culture and seek to engage with our neighbours in ways that are culturally relevant and biblically based, bringing the unchanging truths of God into an ever-changing world.
We are a diverse group of people who love each other like family, because in Jesus we are all adopted into the family of God.
We pray in all we do, because we believe that God listens when we speak and He speaks when we listen. When we pray, God does the things in us and for us that we cannot do for ourselves.
Nathan is the founding pastor of Horizon Church. After sensing God’s call on his life to become a pastor as a teenager, he graduated from Ambrose University in 2015 with a degree in youth ministry. As time went on, God began to re-route Nathan’s life, giving him a vision to plant a church that his friends would love being a part of. Nathan loves music, having learned to play the piano and guitar from an early age, and enjoys any and every sport. He is an avid reader, aspiring photographer, and a diehard Flames fan.
